About the Artist

Jennifer McKay Treichel
I grew up in a family of artists, painting and drawing my whole life. My late paternal grandmother used to tell me that some of my work reminded her of her cousin Wayne Thiebaud's oil paintings. My great grandfather Jesse LeBaron was a great cartoonist who taught Wayne how to draw. My mother is also an accomplished oil painter, Pamela Patrick White; her artwork is respected and displayed at historic sites such as George Washington's Mount Vernon.
I worked for 18 years painting faux finishes, murals, and stripes in private homes. When my daughter was diagnosed with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, I had to give up that career to care for her and work at home. Now I paint everything on canvas- fine art, murals, and 18th century floorcloths. Most of my sales go towards her ongoing pain management; her perseverance and determination motivate me.
I love researching art from the 1700s and reinventing it. I am inspired by nature- animals, flowers, everything has a color or shape that is amazing. Nature holds exquisite patterns which has influenced art throughout history and across the globe. My experience with creative jobs in t-shirt design, pottery, and even cake decoration has also influenced my work. I spend a lot of time in our gardens looking for natural subjects to translate into a work of art, birds and flowers in particular. Then I combine them with a love of fabric, wallpaper, and tile patterns which cross history and borders. I enjoy showing my floorcloths at several historical shows a year, immersed in the 18th century. I love seeing the beautiful hand sewn fashions and have started sewing my own. My favorite part is trim details. I try to make my whole shop and myself a colorful masterpiece for each show.
